FAQ's

What is Brazilian JiuJitsu?

Brazilian jiu jitsu is aground based martial art that utilizes control holds, joint locks andstrangulation techniques in order to submit an opponent or attacker. Brazilianjiu jitsu was developed during the 20th century in Brazil by the Gracie family.

When is the right timeto start training jiu jitsu?

Only you can know when the right time is to start doing something. If you are recovering from a serious injury, it is always a good idea to follow your doctors orders. That being said, if you are not recovering from a serious injury, then right now is the time to start training jiu jitsu. It doesn't matter how out of shape you feel, how old or young you are or whether or not you have ever done any sport before in your life. Every single person needs to know how to defend themselves from an attacker. This is especially true for women and children. We are living in scary times. Violent crime is spiking. Police are overwhelmed. And criminals are looking for victims. Weak victims. Do not be a weak victim. Do not wait for someone to come and save you and your family. Don't wait another second. Take control of your mind, your body and your life. Come visit us at Porrada today.

Can learning jiu jitsu benefit my children?

Yes. When young people are growing up, many can and will suffer from confidence issues. If young people do not develop their confidence during those formative years, the results can leave them mentally crippled for life. I personally remember being afraid when I was young. Afraid of being beaten up, afraid of looking weak, afraid of loosing. These fears came as a result of a complete lack of self confidence. Because I lacked that confidence, I spent my time trying to convince other people how tough and cool I was. This meant fighting, screwing around in school and going to the extreme in order to have others build my confidence and worth for me. I feel like had I learned jiu jitsu earlier in life, a lot of the bad scenarios I ended up putting myself in could have been avoided. It wasn't until I discovered the power of jiu jitsu as an adult that I actually started to build that critical self worth and self confidence. The keyword there is "self". And while we can offer guidance, we as parents or friends or teachers are not the ones who ultimately get our children to climb to the highest peaks of their potential.

In the end it is up to them. And without that foundation of self confidence that jiu jitsu can bring to your child's future, they are in terrible danger of being doomed to a life of low self worth and low self esteem. Constantly seeking the approval of others in order to find some semblance of value in the world. Don't let that happen to your kids. Bring them in to Porrada Jiu Jitsu Academy today.

I'm a little intimidated to start training. What should I do?

Whether we will admit it or not, everyone can be a little intimidated when we start something new. This can be especially true when trying a combat sport for the first time. We encourage people to come watch a class if you feel like you might be overwhelmed or if you are just curios about the nature of the sport. Porrada offers a one week free trial for anyone interested in trying classes out without taking a dive into commitment. The only way we overcome our fears is by facing them. So if you are feeling unsure or nervous, give us a call or just come look though the windows. Every single person at Porrada wants to see you succeed and it is likely that at some point in our lives, we have all been in your shoes.

Do I need to get in shape before I start training?

Absolutely not. At Porrada Jiu Jitsu, we focus on starting with simple movements that are designed to help you build a base layer of strength. It doesn't matter if you've been sitting on the couch for ten years or if you just ran a marathon; if you start by coming in to our beginner classes you will develop the physical abilities you need to defend yourself effectively using jiu jitsu.
